Malware, also known as malicious code and malicious software,1 refers to a program that is inserted into a system, usually covertly, with the intent of compromising the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of the victim’s data, applications, or operating system (OS) or of otherwise annoying or disrupting the victim. Malware such as viruses and worms is usually designed to perform these nefarious functions in such a way that users are unaware of them, at least initially. In the 1980s, malware was occasionally a nuisance or inconvenience to individuals and organizations; today, malware is the most significant external threat to most systems, causing widespread damage and disruption and necessitating extensive recovery efforts within most organizations.
